Poisoned Baby Odhiambo Gets Second Chance at Life

On June 3, a 7 month old male baby named Odhiambo was brought to the health center in a semi-catatonic state. The child had accidentally been fed a highly concentrated insecticide, which was mistaken for cough syrup by the baby’s teenage mother. After consulting with physicians in the U.S., Milton and Fred Ochieng’ acted quickly to save Odhiambo’s life. After struggling to gain IV access, the brothers were forced to insert a central line through his jugular vein. After 8 hours of fluids and observation, Odhiambo began to regain consciousness.

When he roused with symptoms of malaria, it was clear why his mother was originally trying to treat him with cough medicine. After testing positive for malaria in the laboratory, he was treated, and within hours he was well enough to return home. Upon follow up over the next few days, Odhiambo had recovered fully.
