Joel Wickre - Executive Director
Joel has a background in public health and international community development and holds a master’s of science in public health from the University of California at Berkeley. He researched toxic metal contamination in a Nicaraguan mining town while at Dartmouth College, from which he graduated cum laude with highest honors in Biology. He subsequently lived at an orphanage in Mexico, where he worked on issues of child health and environmental hazards in a community living on the Tijuana municipal landfill. Joel first visited Kenya in 2003 under the aegis of Blood:Water Mission, of which he is a board member, and subsequently helped build the partnership between Lwala and Blood:Water Mission. He worked in 2005 as a consultant to Compassion International on children’s adherence to HAART in East Africa. Joel met Milton Ochieng’ on a Dartmouth College-sponsored trip to Nicaragua in 2001, and first visited Lwala in 2003. He spent late 2006 and early 2007 in Lwala assisting with the start-up of the clinic. Since taking the job of executive director in August 2007, Joel spends approximately 1/3 of his time in Lwala. He recently completed an ethnography of changing AIDS stigma in Lwala.
